Frequently Asked QuestionsHow many hours can I study English? Lessons are 15 hours per week on the Group or Select 4 Programmes Will I have to take an English test? When booking a course you will be asked to take an English test. Click here to take test What levels are the courses? We offer Beginners to Intermediate courses. An initial assessment will take place on the first day to ascertain student’s ability and language skills level. When booking a course you will be asked to complete a skills level scan. How long are the courses? You can choose from a 7, 10 or 14 day programme but we can tailor-make programmes for block group bookings or long term requests. How many students in each class? A minimum of 6 and maximum 12 students per class on the Group Programme. The Select 4 programme is a maximum of 4 students where lessons take place in the Teacher’s home. What is the average age of students? Most of our students are between 11-17 years old, however we also have students who are older than this. Do I need a Visa to study? To see which visa you might need, please go to the UK Border agency website http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/studyingintheuk/ as Visa information can change. What do I need to bring to Lessons? All handouts and learning materials are provided by BayLingo but we recommend you bring you own stationary (pens and paper or notebook) and a dictionary. What Insurance do I need? All students are strongly advised to take out personal, medical and property insurance before travelling abroad. BayLingo, its representatives and staff will not be liable for any loss, damages, illness or injuries to people or property. It is the student’s responsibility to take out insurance against all such risks. EU students should obtain an E-111 form. What is a typical British family? A host family can be a two parent or single parent family. Some hosts are couples who have children who have grown up and left home or they are single people without children. British homes usually have only one bathroom, therefore sharing bathroom facilities with the family. Please respect your host family by not making too much noise in the evening - they may have their own children or have to get up for work early in the morning. What will the bedroom be like? Accommodation will be in a single or twin room depending on availability. If you are sharing a twin room it will be with another student of same sex and similar age and where possible a different nationality. Rooms will have a bed with bedding, clothes storage and usually a table or desk. What about pets? Most British families have cats or dogs as family pets. Please advise BayLingo if students have any pet allergies. Can I use the Internet? This is at the discretion of the Host Family. Not all families will have personal computers or wireless internet connections. Students must ask permission of the Host Family to use this facility. Can I bring my own electrical appliances? British sockets have three pins and the voltage is 240 volts. You will need to bring an adaptor if you wish to use your own appliances What meals are included? Daily continental breakfast, packed lunch and evening meals are included. You will be expected to eat the usual family meals, . Any food allergies or specific dietary requirements must be advised in advance prior to arrival. Do not use the family kitchen or help yourself to food . What are the bathroom arrangements? You should have daily access to bathroom facilities, and can take a shower or bath but you will normally be expected to share the facilities with family members and any other students. Remember to use your own toothpaste, shampoo, etc. Can I wash my clothes? Host families will ask you to give them your laundry once a week and they will wash your clothes for you. They will not usually iron your clothes. Can I use the phone? Please do not use the house phone to make outgoing calls. You can receive calls but please keep the calls short. If you have a phone card you must ask permission before using the house phone. What if there is an emergency? BayLingo will provide students with a 24 hour emergency contact number. In case of illness or injury BayLingo will seek advice of a medical consultant unless advised otherwise by the parent/guardian. Student may be charged for a consultation with a doctor, however in most cases, and initial consultation is free. Students from outside the EU are not entitled to free treatment and must ensure the appropriate health and travel insurances are in place prior to travel. BayLingo staff can administer common, non-prescribed medicine such as paracetemol as necessary, unless we are advised by parents/guardians not to do so. In the case of a Medical Emergency, students will be taken to the nearest Accident and Emergency Hospital where initial treatment is free. |
